This article is for those new to Dreamweaver and Defining Sites through the software for better management of the files used in your site. Requirements: Macromedia Dreamweaver Version 4.0 and a live Internet connection.

  1. When you start Macromedia Dreamweaver, it first asks to define a site. Click on the define site button and one more window will popup (DEFINE SITE) showing you buttons like ... NEW, EDIT, DUPLICATE, REMOVE, HELP and DONE.

  2. Click on the NEW button. A window (SITE DEFINITION for UNNAMED SITE 1) will open.

There are 5 subtitles... LOCAL INFO, REMOTE INFO, DESIGN NOTES, SITE MAP, LAYOUT, FILE VIEW COLUMNS on the left hand side.

In the first option ... LOCAL INFO

    • Fill in the SITENAME to whatever you like
    • Give the path of your folder in which the site is located in the LOCAL ROOT FOLDER
    • Fill in the HTTP ADDRESS to your own

In the second option ... REMOTE INFO

    • Select the ACCESS like FTP, LOCAL NETWORK, etc.
    • When you select the FTP option, fill in the below given boxes...

      FTP HOST - (e.g. 202.54.10.100 or optosystems.com.sg)

HOST DIRECTORY - the directory in which you want to upload the site on your server. If you don't want any directory, leave the column blank.

LOGIN - your FTP user ID

      PASSWORD - your FTP password

In the third option... DESIGN NOTES

    • Check the first box of MAINTAIN DESIGN NOTES

There is no need to fill the fourth and fifth options... SITEMAP LAYOUT & FILEVIEW COLUMNS.

  3. Click the OK button at the bottom after filling all the information.

  4. A window will appear telling that it will now create cache ... click OK on that window.

  5. Your initial window (DEFINE SITES) will appear in the left white space. Click DONE.

  6. In Dreamweaver, you can access all your site files by clicking the menu SITE ... SITE FILES option.

  7. On the window (SITE - yoursitename), your local site files will be visible on the right side of the window and the remote site files will be on the left side. To access the remote files, click the button CONNECT TO REMOTE HOST (2 plugs design) below the MENU panel.

  8. The connecting window to your site will appear and as soon as it connects to the site, the remote files will be seen on the left side. Just DRAG N' DROP the files you want from your local folder from the right to the remote server on the left or vice-versa.

  9. You can create a new folder or delete folder/files from the remote server by right click mouse options.

  10. Once you close Dreamweaver, try not to delete or add files to that Site folder outside of Dreamweaver.
